1881 Census Neil’s Father Occupation was a Boat Hirer

According to the 1891 census at the age of 17 Neil was residing with his family at Silver Cottages Largs Ayrshire
 Hi s father Neil was working as a Carter. Neil was working as a Boot/ Shoe maker with his elder brother James Blue age 19 his younger Sister  Elizabeth was 14 a Scholar brother William age 11 was a Scholar and his younger  sister Janet age 10 also a Scholar.

They also had three boarders living with them during 1891 Gordon Gibb age 23 Stone Mason William McKeven age 30 Stone Mason and Archbald Stewart 30 Stone Mason

1901 Census Neil Blue senior was working as a labourer and still residing in Silvergrove cottages with wife Janet who was working as a Laundry keeper, daughter Elizabeth who was working as a Laundress and daughter Janet also working as a Laundress, son William was working as a Gardener. Neil and elder brother James had moved out of the family home and married 

Neil married Frances Elizabeth Davis (1880- ) on the 29th of December 1899 he had been living at 66 Nelson Street previously they moved into Frances family home 135 West Scotland Street which they shared with  

In 1900 they were still living at the same address and it was there that they had Martha Freeman Blue (1900-1982).
